Seth Rogen Forms 'B Team,' Ryan Gosling Says Noe
Seth Rogen could be doing double duty as both producer and star of a film again, according to a new report. Meanwhile, Bret Easton Ellis stirs up some casting rumors on his Twitter account, and Christina Hendricks picks a new role that will return her to the '60s. It's December 27, and you're tuning into today's Casting Call! Seth Rogen Could Lead "The B Team" Funnyman Seth Rogen could be doing double duty on the upcoming Disney spy comedy, "The B Team." Variety is reporting that the "50/50" star will be producing and potentially looking to star in the film. The project is still in its early stages, and follows the story of a top secret agent who is kidnapped and needs to be rescued by his tech staff. The title and plot are a play off "The A-Team," according to Cinema Blend. This is hardly Rogen's first time both starring and producing a film, as he did the same for "50/50," "Superbad" and "The Green Hornet," among others. Ryan Gosling To Join "The Golden Suicides"? If the casting process for Gaspar Noe's upcoming film "The Golden Suicides" is supposed to be kept a secret, then writer Bret Easton Ellis isn't doing a good job keeping it. According to the "Less Than Zero" writer, Ryan Gosling met with Noe last week at Chateau Marmont to talk about the film. It's not the first time that Ellis has implied Gosling might be interested in the part. He tweeted earlier in the month that "Gosling is going to have to wait this year out and then win the Oscar for playing Jeremy Blake in 'The Golden Suicides'." The film follows the double suicides of esteemed artists Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan in 2007. Dan Aykroyd Ready To Join The "Dog Fight" MovieHole has learned that "Ghostbusters" star Dan Aykroyd is the latest actor to join the cast of Jay Roach's political comedy "Dog Fight." Aykroyd will join Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott and John Lithgow in the film. "Dog Fight" follows the story of two rival politicians in South Carolina whose quests to become president become entangled with one another. The flick is set to be released in August. Christina Hendricks Could Be Setting Off The "Bomb" Daily Mail is reporting that Christina Hendricks is the latest actress to be in talks for Sally Potter's upcoming '60s-set anti-nuclear film, "Bomb." The movie also stars Elle Fanning, Alice Englart and Allesandro Nivola, and Annette Bening has been courted for a role. Daily Mail doesn't specify what character Hendricks will be playing. The film follows two teenage rebels who become involved in the Ban the Bomb movement and the sexual revolution. French court rejects bid for Duran Duboi
PARIS -- A French court has rejected FilmFunds' bid to acquire Quinta Industries' Duran Duboi, the Paris-based post-production and VFX house that was declared bankrupt last week. Duran, the company's animation arm, has been shuttered, whereas Duboi, the VFX and post-production arm, will remain open until Jan. 30. Duboi had been set to carry out the VFX on Laurent Tirard's 3D film "Asterix and Obelix: God Save Britannia," among other pics. The film's producers, Marc Missonnier and Olivier Delbosc, said that the film will be completed on time. They are examining their options, and will likely hire another company to handle the visual effects, which will result in a considerable -- but not unmanageable -- cost surplus. French industryites, notably Gaul's film technicians org Ficam, have been up in arms about the collapse of Quinta Industries' three subsidiaries -- Duran Duboi, LTC and Scanlab -- as the companies were due to handle the post-production on 36 films. Ficam said that the five films that are being held by LTC have not been released because the administrator is insisting on immediate payment from the producers for the services provided. Shattered (Lao tang tou)
A Xu Tong presentation. Produced by Han Lei. Directed, edited by Xu Tong. With: Tang Xixin, Tang Caifeng, Tang Yihong, Yang Yang, Lu Shiying. (Putonghua dialogue)A microcosm of China past and provide flows through Xu Tong's intimate docu "Shattered," in which the maverick indie filmmaker is constantly refine his techniques and concerns proven in the earlier "Wheat Harvest" and "Fortune Teller." Xu's capacity to build up on colorful figures is unerring, with loquacious Tang Xixin and also the sharp-tongued daughter Tang Caifeng (last noticed in "Fortune Teller") ruling the screen. Furthermore they repetition two different decades with engaging candor, vulnerable to spark interest from adventurous fest designers. "Some Guy Tang," as he's nicknamed (also the pic's original, less emphatic title), is certainly an 80-year-old widower and outdated vet in the railroads, they good-naturedly values in opening minutes. Living alone in the ramshackle house in northeast Hebei province, he finds themselves constantly hosting his grown children, though Xu helps it be abundantly apparent that although Tang barely tolerates nearly all his kids, he looks after a detailed relationship with Caifeng. You can realise why. As she shown in "Fortune Teller," Caifeng, operating inside the shady prostitution business but trying to broaden by getting a similarly illegal mining operation, is her lady and doesn't suffer fools happily. Hot-tempered Tang has managed to get their very own travails and never hesitates to see Xu (handling his characteristically up-close-and-personal camera and appear) exactly what's on his mind. Each, in by doing this, sees a manifestation inside the other. Tales of Tang's past, by extension China's, simply pour from him. Despite many bitter recollections (the Communist Party overlooked him when he rejected to go to work so he could cope with his ailing youthful daughter), Tang still keeps lovingly presented portraits on his living room wall of key communist heroes in the last century. Such particulars are crucial to Xu just like a filmmaker: When Caifeng runs some minor home improvements as well as the portraits are taken lower, it first appears the symbolic, moldy antiques may be put aside permanently but no, they're soon hung back around the repainted wall. The father's endless memory lane alternates while using daughter's more dangerous current efforts, including trying to assist her jailed goddaughter Yang Yang, boost business at her brothel, deal with the mine (which Xu apparently had little utilization of) in most cases stay a stride while watching law. While Caifeng seems to discover failure everywhere she turns, she nevertheless looks after a pluckiness and determination that belie the title's air of defeat. Galleries fret over online crack in cable window
The majors happen to be worrying for any very long time about flat domestic box office and rapidly declining DVD sales, there is however a more recent section of large concern: the gold coin in the lucrative fundamental cable window. Elevated online exposure for film product -- via Netflix, iTunes, Vudu and also the proprietary site of premium cablers, for example Cinemax Go -- might lead to fundamental nets like Forex, TNT, Comedy Central yet others to scale back on purchases. And vast amounts of money is on the line.Time Warner corporate chief Jeffrey Bewkes states his conglom's TNT and The best spinner's would reduce purchases of some theatricals, though features would still remain a pressure. "The large movie packages, particularly really costly, giant movies, really are a little less strong since they're getting seen a lot of places," Bewkes told a Sept. 22 investor conference. He added that the organization will fine-tune the way it acquires films, focusing more about "certain evergreen game titles and genres which are basically within the sweet place."Even such mildly discouraging words have rarely been heard within the 2 decades that theatricals grew to become ever-growing cornerstones within the agendas of numerous fundamental systems. Bewkes' surveys are really important because his clients are both a buyer and seller of movies. For that congloms' studio arms, revenue from cable has lengthy been important to their financial aspects -- with premium subscription services and ad-supported fundamental channels both playing a significant role. Every film that's a part of a pay cable output deal creates a pile of money within the first premium window. Even though affiliate payouts might be reduced for any film's later, fundamental cable window, fundamental cable systems really save money overall dollars for film product compared to the premium nets, because you will find so much more fundamental channels because of so many more slots to program. Plus, fundamental cable airs the entire gamut of movies, varying from recent high-budget blockbusters completely to films which have finished their first-cycle telecasts -- so-known as library or catalog game titles -- which appear much less frequently on premium services. Based on SNL Kagan, fundamental cable channels within the U.S. will fork over a lot more than $2.8 billion certification theatricals this year, in comparison using the just-under $2 billion spent by premium pay channels for theatricals. Many of the movie investing is targeted inside a dozen fundamental channels for example Forex, Syfy, The best spinner's, Turner Classic Movies and Comedy Central. These heavy customers of movies are important to the financial aspects from the fundamental window. (Theatrical slots have even made an appearance on fundamental systems for example Animal Planet and also the Weather Funnel recently, but individuals devoted movie nights did not stick.) Addressing Bewkes' statement, Deana Myers, senior analyst at SNL Kagan Research, states, "If a person major purchasing fundamental cable network states it will not acquire as numerous films, that will have an effect. Prices can come lower for those who have less purchasers available on the market. It is dependent if other systems part of to purchase films."Based on one way of thinking, however theatricals will not suffer much reduction in fundamental cable, as their star energy make them simple to advertise and repeat. Within the multichannel cable dial, large stars and glossy production values prompt America's nomadic funnel viewers to pause. Better still -- and possibly flying when confronted with the thought of online viewing devaluing a movie -- familiarity features its own cache."Fundamental cable systems deliver reliable rankings by means of quality brand-centric content that individuals like to watch again and again," states Ken Werner, leader of Warner Bros. domestic television distribution. "It's like investing time by having an old friend."Even though it may be contended that theatricals progressively take a back chair because of original cable series gobbling up cycles and program budgets, first-run cable series remain an costly proposition, particularly if they flop. However, movies are often licensed after their theatrical premiere, when they're known amounts, with foreseeable prices associated with box office, and tend to be less expensive than original fare and supply high-quality fodder to fill cablers' huge 24-hour agendas.Jim Packer, Lionsgate leader of worldwide TV and digital distribution, adds another positive: "Films not just rate well, and definitely will provide each network having a marketing vehicle for his or her originals." Still, if online viewing negatively impacts rankings for any film on cable, the end result could hit fundamental cablers harder compared to premium shops, simply because of their different business models. The very best-grossing theatricals command comparable cost from premium pay shops like Cinemax and Starz because they do from fundamental, which nowadays is about $25 million per title. But fundamental cablers are partially ad-supported, -- instead of the ad-free, subscription premium systems -- meaning any decrease in rankings would result in a similar decrease in revenue. And fundamental cablers buy films in a different way the premium channels do. Premium nets lock in most the flicks of the major studio for multiple years in output deals, carrying out to many films sight unseen. But fundamental systems generally purchase only a few at any given time, making their deals only after films achieve the theatrical window as well as their box office is famous. Possibly some fundamental cablers may wish to consider online viewing trends for specific movies too. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Voice cast:Allen Gregory P Longpre - Jonah Hill
Richard P Longpre - French Stewart
Patrick Vanderweel - Cristina Pucelli
Jeremy P Longpre - Nat Faxon
Stewart Rossmyre - Will Forte
Julie Neung - Pleasure OsmanskiUnlike lots of animated shows, "Allen Gregory" includes a logical reason behind using the medium: Creating a series around an insanely precocious and pretentious 7-year-old boy wouldn't simply be hard to cast, but simply think of the production limits that will impose. So co-creator Jonah Hill voices the title character -- a youngster with two gay fathers, an adopted Cambodian sister he deeply resents along with a preference for Pinot Grigio with lunch. Deeply absurd only fitfully funny, "Allen" will most likely be loved with a small group, although not especially loved by many people. Allen is introduced in a lavish party tossed by his father Richard (French Stewart), throughout which pop berates partner Jeremy (Nat Faxon) and concurrently remembers Allen because the world's youngest Tony champion. The bespectacled tyke, consequently, expresses gratitude "to everybody here whose dreams are fueled by my accomplishments." Ah, there is however trouble in paradise. So far home-trained by Jeremy, the apparently well-heeled Richard needs his much-maligned partner to reenter the labor force, for reasons he will not specify. This turn of occasions forces Allen to go to school, not to mention, the spoiled boy is definitely an awkward easily fit in his new surroundings -- telling the teacher he's fine together with her, provided she knows her authority does not exceed his. "Allen Gregory" is unquestionably strange, along with a little dangerous in the mixture of sexual quite happy with a young child protagonist within an animated format. Sure, "The Simpsons" will get away with murder, but it is still surprising to determine another-grader presented to be infatuated together with his sixtysomething teacher, and also the eager-to-please school board advocating her to indulge individuals dreams. (Don't look now, however your boycott campaign in the Parents Television Council is doubtless already within the mail.) Mostly, though, like many a prodigy, "Allen Gregory's" over-the-top figures don't promise to age perfectly. This is a shame, really, because the show includes a awesome look and really the possibility to become about something in working with the way a pretentious egghead attempts to easily fit in. As constituted, "Allen" offers audiences little foundation to latch onto, apart from the fleeting diversion of hearing Hill playing a young child who talks as an NPR morning host. Practically speaking, being sandwiched between two established series must provide this newcomer sampling. Furthermore, additionally to designers Hill, Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, the show has "Family Man's" David A. Goodman to supervise its ongoing education and counts former News Corp. chief operating officer Peter Chernin among its brain trust. Still, if "Allen Gregory's" pilot is definitely an accurate preview of what's in the future, this gifted tot's graduation from primetime might come earlier than some of his many fathers would welcome. Ben Stiller Brings Back Zoolander, Faces Off in V-Neck Battle on Saturday Night Live
Ben Stiller, Bill Hader Ben Stiller hosted Saturday Night Live for the second time, but the return appearance of the writer-actor (and brief SNL featured player) was overshadowed by the return of one of his most famous characters - model Derek Zoolander. In a perfect match, Zoolander appeared alongside "Weekend Update" correspondent Stefon (Bill Hader) to promote his upcoming Halloween party in the middle of the Hudson River. He was dumb as ever ("am I on the news?"), but instead of "blue steel," Zoolander showed up off his "cold coffee" look and instead of The Derek Zoolander Foundation For Kids Who Can't Read Good and Want To Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too, all proceeds from his Halloween party will benefit The Derek Zoolander Foundation for Fat Kids Who Are Fat But Not in a Cute Way Like That Fat Kid on Modern Family: Watch more videos from Saturday Night Live Exuding a Zoolander-esque confidence, Stiller also played a man engaged in a V-neck battle that went a little (read: a lot) too deep: It was no Tom Cruise, but Stiller did his best Bruce Springsteen impersonation for a fake commercial selling The Boss' best stories between songs (for instance, "that time we all got bandanas"). He nailed Springsteen's trademark grunts and found a suitable Lil Stevie in Fred Armisen: Sadly, Stiller's set included no surprise appearance from former SNL cast member, Stiller's Tower Heist co-star Eddie Murphy. But at least we know his Zoolander impression is up-to-snuff for that upcoming sequel. What was your favorite sketch of the night?

David Cronenbergs The Fly follow-up has the capacity to go
David Cronenberg has written a follow-up for the Fly which is waiting for Fox to find out whether they wish to ensure it is.Pressed about whispers from the Fly remake inside a recent Dangerous Method junket, Cronenberg mentioned."The Fly is not exactly a remake, it's type of a follow-up, kinda."Yeah, that was an issue. I've written a script of the, and I am unsure in the event that will truly happen, but that has associated with Fox."We're unsure so what can stop Fox trying to greenlight a follow-up for the Fly written and possibly directed by Cronenberg. Possibly they're really installed on Chris Walas' The Fly II.Or even they were so traumatised with the bit while using dog because film that any script marked 'The Fly II' goes into the bin.Either in situation, it is really an exciting prospect. We presently live in a worldwide where Ridley Scott is installed on a prequel to Alien together with a follow-up to Edge Runner, and David Cronenberg is searching in a Fly 2 script. That's pretty strange if you contemplate it.

Paul Feig Exits Bridget Johnson 3 Universal Searching For Brit Director For The month of january Start
EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures and dealing Title Films will require a brand new director for Bridget Johnson 3, and that i hear they need a Brit. Paul Feig has withdrawn after developing the newest draft from the script using the intention to direct. I’m told that each side agreed it didn’t exercise which maybe case a essential British comedy that requires an english sensibility. They'll set a director soon because they are still slated to begin production in The month of january, with Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant all wanting to return. Feig has enough to help keep him busy at Universal, where he just directed the sleeper hit Bridesmaids. He’s got two projects there including an untitled comedy he’s conntacting direct for producer Judd Apatow, with the expectation that Jon Hamm will have a man enthusiastic about a lady who’ll be performed by Melissa McCarthy. That certainly puts a lot of the Bridesmaids team together, and it'll need to do before studio understands a method to get going on the Bridesmaids follow up after the first made $286 million worldwide on the $32 million budget. Hamm was lately cited stating that Kristen Wiig, who starred in and co-authored the initial, wasn’t prone to return. I’ve been hearing exactly the same factor for some time, however the studio is hopeful that everything has transformed for how long she was initially requested, once the film only agreed to be being a phenomenon also it was all a little overwhelming. She’s now doing her final season of Saturday Evening Live, also it wouldn’t function as the worst factor on the planet to begin the following stage of her career using the second installment of the franchise that individuals really need to see. Wiig authored the script with Annie Mumolo, and to date they haven’t even develop a follow up idea. Obviously, Universal practical knowledge ongoing hit movies once the original stars don’t return: That happened using the Fast And Also The Furious when Vin Diesel rejected to come back for that second film. The franchise did fine anyway, and that he’s back now. When the studio could possibly get back Wiig and also the cast which includes McCarthy (who's showing herself a proficient physical comic actress most lately with last weekend’s insanely funny SNL hosting stint), the follow up makes an excessive amount of sense to not take place in some form.
New era, new rules
Targeted marketing has helped Fox promote catalog franchises including 'X-Men: First Class.' For audiences the many way to view movies -- via game consoles, smartphones, Internet, television -- is a boon but for marketers, it's been a few years of rewriting the rules of engagement."We've actually seen growth in this downturn economy on VOD and EST, hitting new levels on VOD and EST," says Aubrey Freeborn, senior VP of marketing and product management for worldwide VOD and electronic sell-through at 20th Century Fox. Freeborn is a panelist at Variety's Film Marketing Summit, addressing the topic Marketing Across Windows: Theatrical, VOD, Home Entertainment.Freeborn says one advance that has affected the industry for the better is day-and-date availability; it has helped VOD growth because of the new releases and the content is fresher. She adds another reason for the upswing is new improvements in navigation -- it is easier to discover and search for content and it is also easier to see what is new and available. However, Fox is not waiting around to see what the next new invention may be, they, like other Hollywood majors, are being proactive in searching out new ways to market."We have worked closely with the cable companies and other studios to create an industrywide marketing effort under the 'Movies on Demand' brand that has quickly become the most comprehensive and successful campaign to date for VOD. We've only scratched the surface on the growth opportunities," Freeborn says.Fox has also made other improvements in looking to get the attention of consumers in the digital download arena, by adding behind-the-scenes material and other special content that consumers came to expect on a DVD onto digital files."We can work together with our theatrical colleagues to promote theatrical releases with special content, while at the same time promoting the catalog, such as 'X-Men: First Class' and the 'X-Men' franchise," Freeborn says.Through targeted marketing, Fox has found out a few surprising (and helpful) things as well."VOD used to be very male and teen -- it's broadened and now the primary consumer is age 35-44 for women in the traditional VOD outlets. Another interesting thing is that the demos from the platforms vary, based on whether it's Xbox, Comcast, etc. Our marketing approach is targeted as much as possible based on the demo of the platform," says Freeborn.FILM MARKETING SUMMIT 2011:New era, new rules | The hard sell | Levy's job is a dream that works Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Roald Dahl's BFG To Hit The Big Screen
Human beans rejoice!Back in 1989, now defunct children's TV animation studio Cosgrove Hall made a film version of The BFG, starring David Jason as the Big FriendlyGiant himself and Amanda Root as Sophie, the miniature-by-comparison herione. It arrived on TVscreens on Christmas Day that year, and now, 22 years later, ETwriter Melissa Mathison, veteran super producer Frank Marshall and Dreamworks itself are planning on making a live-action version.Mathison, as you might have guessed, is on writing duties, but no director or actors have been announced, though we're sure the rumours will start flying about the internet soon enough. It seems like a sensible move from Dreamworks, with Dahl stories proving to be a rich vein for directors over the years, from Nic Roeg's The Witches to Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr.Fox.And as it's live action, we're interested to see who exactly the BFGis going to be, so, you know, big and friendly. Hmm.No release date has been earmarked yet for The BFG, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out.Transformers 3 Dark Of The Moon Online Free

Jennifer Salke, 'Chuck's' Zachary Levi to Be Honored at Operation Smile Gala
They took him away. People were all over him. Just hovering around him. I couldn't see his face at all." NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke is recalling the tense moments following her son Henry's birth. "My husband was leaning over him like this," she says, hands cupping her head in imitation. "I remember thinking to myself, 'Oh my God, there's something mortally wrong with my child.' " She continues, a now 12-year-old Henry seated beside her in her Universal City office, "When they turned and came toward me, I had one of those moments where all of the sound dropped out." She pauses. "I thought to myself, 'These people are going to say something to me right now that's going to change my life forever.' " What the doctors shared with her that day did change her life, but not for the reason she thought it would. Henry was born with a cleft lip, a birth defect so common worldwide that every three minutes a child is born with that or a cleft palate. Fortunately for Jennifer, who for nearly a decade served as a high-ranking executive behind such hits as Glee and Modern Family at 20th Century Fox TV before joining NBC this summer, it was a relatively easy fix: Two early surgeries erased any real trace. (She then had twin daughters who do not have cleft conditions.) It isn't so easy for victims elsewhere in the world, where one in 10 children born with a cleft condition will die before their first birthday, often from malnutrition. Since 1982, Operation Smile has made this its cause, providing more than 200,000 free and fairly simple surgeries to those with these and other facial deformities in developing countries. Looking for a way to do more, Henry created a fund-raising page on the Operation Smile website in 2009. In a matter of months, he had raised $20,000, and he and his parents were introduced to Smile founders William and Kathy Magee through mutual friend and Smile board member Billy Bush. In the two-plus years since, Henry has become one of the charity's most active youth ambassadors. "He comes to us with a pad of paper and starts listing all of these ways to raise more money for surgeries," says Kathy Magee, ticking off examples such as T-shirts and DJ benefits (his moniker is DJ Smile). After a couple of years of stateside fund-raising -- Henry's second round raised $48,000, his third recently began -- and multiple speaking engagements, mother and son journeyed to Rio de Janeiro for their first nine-day Smile mission. (Operation Smile hosted more than 150 missions in 2010, providing on-location surgeries and care for cleft victims.) In Rio, they spent time with patients, educating them and their families. Jennifer traveled with a picture of Henry as a cleft-lipped baby, which she showed often as a reminder of what these doctors would be able to do. The pair spent time in the operating rooms, which Henry admits was "a little scary." On Sept. 23, Jennifer and Henry will be honored alongside Zachary Levi, Sue Tsao and Giuliana and Bill Rancic at the annual Operation Smile Gala in Los Angeles. From there, the Salkes will begin planning their next trip: a Smile mission to Africa. Related Topics Zachary Levi Philanthropy Chuck NBC Entertainment Watch Movies For Free
12 Burning TV Questions Answered (Kind Of)
THR's chief TV critic weighs in on the turmoil in television -- big bets on expensive shows, networks struggling to right themselves and risky new leads taking over aging hits.our editor recommends18 Familiar Faces of Fall TVFall TV Death Pool: Will 'Charlie's Angels,' 'Whitney' or 'How to Be a Gentleman' Be Axed First?Fall TV's 12 Most Anticipated ShowsFall TV Preview 2011: 10 Fresh Faces To KnowFall TV Preview 2011: The New ShowsFall TV Preview 2011: The Returning Shows Will Terra Nova and The X Factor deliver for Fox? These are big, big shows. The bet here is that Terra Nova will underperform but not fail, while X Factor might even exceed what Fox is expecting. Of course, if they both fail, there will be high-level job openings galore. Will Ashton Kutcher save Two and a Half Men? A lot of eyes will be on him. Of course, most of those eyes watched the show in the first place and still laughed, so it's not like standards are very high. The show's Sept. 19 premiere lured nearly 28 million viewers. Will FX's American Horror Story be the most-talked-about fall series, and will it live up to the hype? I thought Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's pilot was a gigantic, assaultive mess, but I eagerly await the next couple of installments to see if they can fix the confusing insanity. Here's a wild guess: The premiere breaks FX's ratings records, but the drop rate after that is precipitous. Will AMC wobble any more? Season two of The Walking Dead will be the starting point for those seeking clues. The guess here is that Walking Dead, despite working on a tighter budget, will do just fine and is in good hands even with showrunner Glen Mazzara stepping in for the fired Frank Darabont. But Mad Men fans have a long wait until its return, the pilot for the new Western series Hell on Wheels (Nov. 6) isn't very good, and fallout from The Killing's unsatisfying season finale is likely to linger. If Killing executive producer Veena Sud can't fix her plotting mistakes in season two, a larger viewer mutiny will be at hand -- and AMC will be left in panic mode. Will the faux Mad Men-inspired nostalgia of The Playboy Club and Pan Am mesmerize a mainstream audience? Guess: No. But the overt sexism, even if it was inherent during that era, will likely turn off female viewers (who won't buy the "empowerment" nonsense). If they avoid it in droves, these shows are dead. Will new entertainment president Bob Greenblatt turn the Good Ship Cinder Block at NBC around? Everybody knows the challenge in front of him, so the bar is rightfully low. I'm predicting he delivers much better than expected, though more work awaits. Will Desperate Housewives go out with a bang after eight seasons? And, perhaps even more important, will creator Marc Cherry's decision to pull the plug on the series be adopted by other showrunners on veteran dramas? Will they realize that the time has come to move on? Our eyes are on Grey's Anatomy, CSI: Anything, the Law & Order franchise and sundry CW shows. Nevermind Kutcher; how will Ted Danson do on CSI and James Spader on The Office? Guess: Well and not so well. Danson has always been intriguing as a dramatic actor, something he's been fine-tuning in recent years. While Spader can do funny, it might be less about him and more about Office just seeming played out, no matter who's the boss. What will happen to the graduating class of stars on Glee, and will anyone care? Or will there just be a spinoff? Or do they all become townies who hang around near the school? Will there be bigger hits in midseason than in fall? There certainly seems to be more excitement (especially from critics and, if you pressed them to reveal the truth, probably from network execs) about what's to come from January onward with such shows as NBC's Smash and Awake and Fox's Alcatraz. Will the programming experiment of the season -- CBS moving the comedy Rules of Engagement to Saturday (yes, Saturday, TV's graveyard) -- reinvigorate the night for scripted shows? Guess: No. But it's a valiant effort. Will people stay away from Prime Suspect if they were fans of the original? They shouldn't. It doesn't share any noticeable DNA with the original. About the only familiar trait is that, in the pilot, the sexism is painted on pretty thick -- sexism being one of the main things from which the original Jane Tennison suffered. But the producers have said they are going to backtrack on that -- it's less of an issue, but not extinct, in the current age. While it was a little disconcerting to hear them dismiss the content of the original series as dated, especially when the new one is really just a procedural that breaks no ground, there's a very strong reason to watch the new version: Maria Bello.
